1920's

The Cotton Club was the place to be in Harlem in the late 1920’s and early 30’s. Aristocrats poured into the pricey club to hear the bands of Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington while sipping back beverages banned by the Prohibition”. Jazz babies, flapper floozies doing the Charleston with Gatsby gallants and gangsters rubbing shoulders with all the swells. In the smoky speakeasy its show time and the big band hits the stage behind art deco sconces. A chanteuse prepares for a sultry floor number backstage in front of dressing room mirrors framed with light globes, feather boa casually flung within easy reach. Outside the depression is at its worst but the revellers pay no heed as they roll up in gorgeous Rolls-Royces decked out in glamorous gowns, feathered and jewelled, and disappear through the glittering arched sign to the thrilling interior of the COTTON CLUB.
